THE TERRELL FAMILY IN EUROPE

For many years it appeared our Terrell line could trace back to English and French royalty. That is clearly the conclusion of genealogists like Emma Dicken, who connect Robert Tyrrell (who married Jane Baldwin) to George Tyrrell of Thornton who is himself descended from King Edward I and his wife is also a descendant (through the second marriage of Joan Plantagenet).

But more recent research suggests Robert comes from a line of clothing merchants, not royalty. The late O. F. Brown ("The Tyrrells of England") persuade the author that our line of Tyrrolde (Tyrrold, Turrolde) come from West Hagbourne in the County of Berkshire. Of course, its possible we still tie back into the royal Tyrrell line, but that will fall to someone else to find.

THE TERRELL FAMILY IN AMERICA
The Tyrrell family came to America in 1656 in the person of Richmond Tyrrell. Richmond marries and his family is the basis for the Terrell, Terrill and (in a few places) Tirrell families, today.

Richmond's brothers William (RIN #01618) and Robert (RIN #01622) both visited Virginia, but probably didn't stay. Robert was a merchant, based in London, who carried on considerable trade with the Colony. We know he died in London in 1677 without children. Brother William may have come to Virginia. Richmond was given land by the King based on the transportation of twelve persons to America, including one William Tyrrell. But it is Richmond, not William, who deeds both his land and his brother William's (29 Apr 1672). There are two additional references to William coming over to Virginia, which suggests that like his brother Robert, William may have made several business trips to the Colonies (or Richmond may have collected for his transportation illegally, something that was widely practiced in the Virginia colony). There is no evidence in Virginia of William after 1667. There is some evidence that he was in Reading, England, married to a woman named Martha and the father of a daughter, Mary.

A number of researchers believe Richmond's brother William was a founding father in Virginia. They confuse him with Richmond's son William (ie. showing him married to Susannah Waters). To this date, we believe the best evidence, especially an examination of dates, supports William (who married Susannah) as Richmond's son. That is what we show here. Nevertheless, some continue to show him as Richmond's brother.

RICHMOND TYRRELL
Richmond Tyrrell arrived in New Kent County and took possession of 640 acres of land (DB 4, p. 112) on 28 Nov 1656. The land was on the Southwest side of the York River near Diascund Creek, Deascon Swamp and Cattail Swamp. This author has used current local maps and believes that location is near the intersection of Route 33 and 168, where Angel View Church now stands.

Because the Terrell line is so well documented, it would take hundreds of pages to trace our line from Robert Tyrrold of England. . Instead, we show descendents Richmond Terrell. And seperately we have the line between Robert and Richmond.
