THIRD GENERATION
4. Sampson POWERS
was born before 1729 in Princess Anne County, VA. He died in Oct 1813 in Mecklenburg
County, Virginia.
This is the Sampson Power of Princess Anne County (now Virginia Beach).
He was 21 by the time of his Father's will (in 1750), which puts his birth before
1729.
We believe this Sampson is also the same Sampson who bought land in Mecklenburg
County in 1780 from William and Joseph Power. Is it possible Joseph is his brother
or half-brother?
I believe this is the Sampson Power who is shown in the Princess Anne
County Minutes Book as a "master tailor" who takes an apprentice on
15 February 1750 and again 19 February 1751. Those same records show a Samuel
Power also a "master tailor" with apprentices in 1751 and 1752. I believe
the dates probably suggest Samuel Powers, this Sampson's brother.
In the first Census (The census of 1790), Sampson Power is living in Mecklenburg
County, Virginia. By the standards of the day, he is prosperous, with three slaves
and substantial property. On adjacent farms, there are two other Powers families.
There is William Powers with a family of seven persons and Joseph Powers.
Sarah UNK died in 1831 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
The 1830 Mecklenburg Census shows her alone in the home. Sampson POWERS and
Sarah UNK had the following children:
+14 i.
William POWERS.
+15 ii.
Samuel POWERS.
+16 iii.
Patsy (Patty) POWERS.
+17 iv.
Sally Ann POWERS. |
