FIFTH GENERATION
18. Henry POWERS was
born in 1809 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He died on 8 May 1884 in Lunenburg
County, Virginia.
Henry Powers starts buying land on or near Flat Rock Creek Lunenburg
County on 04 Apr 1850. On that date he buys 87 acres from Richard and Mary Taylor
for $300 (DB 35, p.42). Since there is no reference to it being adjacent to land
he already owns, we believe this is the first purchase. Henry (along with Elizabeth
Powers, Nancy Powers, Mary Ann Powers, William Powers and Robert Powers) sell
some Lunenburg land to George Tucker on 4 Jul 1850 (DB 35, p.60). On 14 Feb 1852,
he buys two adjacent parcels (DB 35, p.29). On 30 Sep 1854, Henry Powers buys
100 acres west of Flat Rock Creek (DB 35, p. 559) from David Garland. He was
married to Mary Ann ABERNATHY (daughter of Miles ABERNATHY
and Ann E. UNK) on 22 Dec 1831 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
Mary Ann ABERNATHY was born in 1807 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
She died in 1874. Death records in Lunenburg County show she died from TB.
Henry POWERS and Mary Ann ABERNATHY had the following children:
+33 i.
William Henry POWERS.
34 ii.
George POWERS was born in 1837 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.
Apparently George Powers never formally married although the family says
he "lived" with a Black woman for a number of years. He is apparently
burried with her. This information is reluctantly confirmed by both Kathrine
Ferguson and Irving Powers. Neither apparently knows her name or if there are
children.
In the records of Lunenburg County, there are at least two references to
George making legal arrangements with the firm of Turnbull and Bell in the period
1891-1894. And he sells land to Josephine Epes on 26 Jan 1894 (db 45, p. 277)
and Sallie Gee (db 46, 626).
